"Marvellous," he said. "Absolutely marvellous"

I’m now a big Len Deighton fan after reading and loving Berlin Game, and it is highly likely I’m going to devour his entire back catalogue based on the fantastic standard of this second in the Bernard Samson.

It continues the story from the first book, and adds Mexico to London and Berlin as the locations for a spy thriller with many, many layers of intrigue; it truly is a trust nobody scenario.

We follow Samson as he picks his way through a complex attempt to find and flip a KGB agent; this is all against the backdrop of his wife having defected to the Soviet Union with the result of intense suspicion placed upon himself of being a double agent.

It’s brilliantly written, a tightly plotted narrative wrapped by flowing dialogue, descriptive tension, and what I think is a genius pacing.

Can’t wait for the next installment…
