What to do with an enormous pile of old CDs, when you only listen to streaming or radio? Easy. Get a custom mount sorted, pick out some of your favourites and get them framed for a personalised piece of art.
I hunted around online for ages to see if anybody sold mounts designed for a matrix of CD covers. There are loads of custom mounts for presenting individual vinyl and CD albums, but nothing that I could find for a grid of CDs.
So I contacted frames.co.uk who accepted a design of my mount and couriered over a bespoke mount and fitted frame. Each aperture is 115mm x 113mm, which a CD cover sits behind nicely with the minimal overlap needed to tape them securely.
Attaching all the covers was a pretty time consuming activity as many have designs with critical elements very close to the edges and so many adjustments were needed. But when finished it looked like this:
My only grumble with frames.co.uk was that the grid should have been equally spaced with 20mm between every row and column. The mount they sent was actually a lot more randomly spaced and far less accurate that I’d expected. But they very quickly accepted the error and refunded 30% – and actually, on the wall nobody apart from myself has ever noticed…
