"Marvellous," he said. "Absolutely marvellous"

Clown Town

After getting a little bogged down in a WW1 history tome, I wimped out and read the latest Mick Herron in a weekend as a literary palate cleanser – and it did the trick.

This is one of the best Slow Horses, still with an over the top set piece but one surrounded by back stories and plots that feel more solid than some of the more extreme in the series.

The neverending stream of inventive invective, mainly from Jackson Lamb but supported by the wider cast, is impressive as ever. The plot builds on previous back stories, the characters are familiar but continue to develop, and the ending is twistingly satisfying.

Herron’s style is now so engrained and his Slow Horses world so very entertaining. Let’s hope he keeps producing.
