I’m really motoring through my birthday books, it’s been a good haul. This was entertainingly depressing, covering the UK’s decline by dedicating a chapter to each of a series of anti-heroes collectively responsible for the mess we inhabit.
Murdoch, Johnson, Cummings, Truss, Cameron, Dacre, Corbyn and a few others all get the treatment. A torrent of quotes, actions, word and deeds from each that catalogue their malicious/ incompetent/ Machiavellian impact on our national decline.
It’s largely content that is familiar to anybody who has laid attention participation over the last decade, but does have an impact when laid out in close proximity. The combination of a malevolent media, manipulative agenda-driven think tanks, and a dishonest and incompetent political class is compellingly articulated as the driving force.
However, how we reclaim these as positive institutions is left to the reader… And I’m afraid I do not have a clue.
