I was bought the first Rebus novel for Christmas, and given it’s been well over a decade since I last read Ian Rankin it was an invite to reacquaint myself with his most famous character.
One main memory were the dark, rich descriptions of Edinburgh, a city in which I would have loved to have lived. And yes, these are terrific, really capturing the gothic underbelly of Auld Reekie.
The plot is a pure crime thriller, excellently paced with some slightly preposterous twists and turns. It’s the problem with being a Le Carre fan… Most other thrillers have a Hollywood vibe compared to his slower, thoughtful, more art-house approach.
Undeniably a page-turner, Knots & Crosses is a great read, delivered great entertainment and I will be reading more Rebus. But high brow it is not…
