Yet another random purchases based on little more than a memory that Chris Mullins seemed a) a decent MP and b) had written some well regarded political diaries. Turned out to be a well authored, short and snappy read.
I perhaps should have read the earlier A Very British Coup first, but this still worked pretty well as a standalone novel save for a few back references.
It follows a political insider who becomes a candidate, then newly elected MP, then rising star in the opposition.
Full of political manoeuvring as you would expect, it also has unexpected moments of real tenderness, emotion, and pathos.
The story moves along at a clip, and is the ideal novella to curl up with and rattle through in a couple of sittings.
