The second of my read-agains, this Umberto Eco classic has been on the shelf for years, decades even.
A murder mystery set in a mysterious monastery back in the 14th century, it’s an initially bizarre combination of whodunnit combined with lengthy theological debates about all manner of philosophical topics. Plus a regular smattering of Latin and other languages that leave us uneducated a little in the dark without regular trips to Google translate.
But like many brilliant books, once you are absorbed into its universe, with its peculiar quirks and patterns, it becomes an absorbing story. The atmospheric sense of the machinations within the Christian church, the politics, ego, and genuine religious devotion feels very real.
Really enjoyed this one.
