Apparently author Robert Harris wrote this book during the height of Covid, which means he definitely had a more productive lockdown than I.
As ever with his historical thrillers he has woven his fictional characters around real events to create a pacey story. As the title suggests, this novel is the tale of the V2 rockets that were used by the Nazis to terrorise London.
Harris read an obituary of a member of the WAAF who was part of the team of women that attempted to calculate the launch sites of the V2s using early radar readings. He was inspired to dig deeper and used her amazing story as the genesis for his.
The book flips back and forth between a German rocket engineer who is having severe ethical and moral doubts about the impact his contribution is having, and a young WAAF officer who is both a victim and hunter of his missiles.
Enjoyable read, nothing too deep but usual high quality Harris fare.
