A review sold this as the origin story of Trump – that is, what happened in the USA to create the conditions where such an inappropriate, under-qualified, and frankly terrible person could be chosen by the American voters as their president.

Which it both is and isn’t. Trump barely features. This covers US political characters from history, mainly late 20th century, such as Pat Buchanan, Ross Perot, David Dukes etc. who all contributed to steering the discourse and the Overton window of acceptability to a place that Trump could exploit.

It’s very well researched and written, if not a little heavy going for somebody such as myself that isn’t too familiar with this depth of US political detail.

I still found it an interesting read, especially learning about some of the conservative essays that describe Trumpism a few decades before he arrived.
